Coating Concrete in the Township That Perfected It

Epoxy flooring in Whitehall Township goes on top of a material with deep local roots. Railroad cuts here exposed limestone, and David O. Saylor perfected and patented a process for making Portland cement. The first Portland cement plant stood between the villages of Cementon and Coplay. By 1914, 70% of the cement made in the United States came from this Lehigh District. Today Whitehall is a suburb of 29,173 people, and the concrete in its garages, basements and stores still needs protecting.

Why good concrete still needs a coating

Portland cement concrete is strong, but it is also porous. It soaks up oil, salt brine and spilled chemicals, and its surface wears and dusts under traffic. A coating seals those pores. To bond, it needs the surface opened by grinding and any weak top layer removed. That is the same in a 1950s Hokendauqua garage and a newer slab off MacArthur Road.

Homes across a dozen villages

Whitehall formed from several villages, including Cementon, Eagle Point, Egypt, Fullerton, Hokendauqua, Mickleys, Stiles and West Catasauqua. The township had 10,744 housing units in the 2010 count, and they span many decades. Typical jobs we see:

  • Older garages with oil-soaked concrete and patched cracks.
  • Basements with paint that has started to peel.
  • Attached garages where salt has scaled the floor near the door.

We strip what is failing, repair the slab and then choose a system for how you use the space.

The commercial side

The Lehigh Valley Mall and Whitehall Plaza anchor a long retail strip along MacArthur Road (PA 145), with U.S. 22 crossing the south end of the township. Stores, auto service bays, restaurants and storage rooms in that corridor all stand on concrete. Those floors take carts, pallet jacks and constant foot traffic. We install commercial and warehouse floor epoxy in thicker 100% solids builds, with texture in wet areas and line striping where it helps. We can schedule work in sections or after hours so the business stays open.

Winter at the garage door

Whitehall sits in a hot-summer humid continental climate. January in Hokendauqua averages about 28.8°F and July about 73.8°F. Cars come home from U.S. 22 and MacArthur Road carrying salt slush, and it melts on the garage floor. In older garages the first few feet past the door are usually rough and pitted for that reason. We grind and fill that area first so the new surface is even, then seal it so brine can be squeegeed out instead of soaking in.

Floors in the cement villages

Cementon and the villages near the old Coplay works grew up around cement plants that drew immigrants from Austria-Hungary. Many of the homes built for those families are still standing. Their basements and garages have older concrete that has been patched and painted more than once. We remove what is loose, fill and level, and test for moisture. Then we choose between a flake garage system, a basement epoxy, or a repair-only job if that is all the floor needs.

Matching the system to the space

  • Garage floor coating or epoxy flake floors for home garages.
  • Polyaspartic floor coating when a fast return to service matters.
  • Basement floor epoxy after a moisture test.
  • Concrete crack and floor repair for spalls and joints, alone or before a coating.

Whitehall Township Questions

Can you coat a store or service bay without closing the business?

Often, yes. We can work in sections, after hours or over a weekend, and fast-curing systems shorten downtime. We plan the schedule with you before the quote is final.

My Hokendauqua garage has old paint that is peeling. Can you coat over it?

We remove it first. A new coating is only as strong as what is under it, so peeling paint gets ground off down to sound concrete before any repair or coating.

Is a basement coating worth it in an older Whitehall home?

It can be, if the slab passes a moisture test. A coated basement is brighter and easier to clean. If the test shows heavy moisture, we will tell you what needs to happen first.
